This is an exhilarating time. Summer is around the corner, and you’ll never use the word “Finals” again unless you’re talking about the WNBA. You’re officially an adult with a job thrown into the game of LIFE, with the rest of us trying our best to navigate the game. There are so many life skills to learn as an adult that we are overwhelmed on day one. New bills to pay, new rules to learn, new people to work with, new relationships to nurture. Adulting is hard, and responsibilities pile up! Officially school is done, but learning is a lifelong skill.

I graduated in the Spring of 2002 from Lehigh University. My car at the time was a 1993 Honda Accord. Maroon. Her name was Princess, and just like a royal, she was high maintenance. Princess had many problems that I couldn’t afford to fix on a limited budget as a student. The biggest problem was I could only drive her for 15 min, or she would start to overheat. Therefore I only drove her for quick trips around campus.
My gift to myself for graduating as an engineer was a new car! I couldn’t wait to get rid of Princess and get a new ride. One I could stunt in. One that wouldn’t embarrass me. One that wasn’t leaking oil and started up every time I turned the ignition. I chose a Ford Explorer Dark Green. Her name was Hunter.
I made the biggest mistake drivers make with vehicles with my Hunter. I shop hoped or went to different mechanics or auto repair shops each time my car needed work. I refused upsells because I thought they were all taking advantage of me, and I waited until the last minute to get my oil changes. If a light came up on the dashboard, I panicked. I didn’t have a mechanic I could trust to help me with my car and no men in my family to help (we are a family of 7 women).
Hunter lasted two years. After Hunter, there was Red (another Ford Explorer), Sasha (2008 Kia Sorento), Duff (1998 Toyota Camry), and Alexandra (2010 VW Jetta). I had a horrible relationship with all these cars, except for Alexandra (I purchased her in 2014 when I was already a shecanic). I made many bad money mistakes and was lucky I didn’t have a car crash driving on bald tires. I hated my automotive experiences and felt like all cars were against me.
When I went to automotive technology school in 2012 to learn about cars, how to take care of them, and how to repair them, I couldn’t wait to share what I was learning with my fellow sisters who felt like auto airheads - as I did. I was eager to build a business that gave women the automotive experience they wanted and deserved. My goal was to help other women learn from my mistakes and to change their perceptions about cars.
Part of being an adult is taking care of the expensive things you must buy to live. A house and your cars will always be the most significant personal purchases you make in life.
